Why Pique Fabric Works for Summer Heat

Pique fabric earns its place in warm weather because of how the cloth is built, not because of marketing claims. The raised ridges open small channels for air. The face holds a collar. Cotton pique softens with wear and still keeps structure after wash. That is why so many polo shirts use it when the day is hot and the evening still asks for a clean neckline.

If you want to feel that texture on a finished piece, start with the men's polos collection. The same face runs through garment-dyed Club and Hampton styles cut for day heat and coastal walks.

What pique is

Pique (pee-kay) is a weave or knit face with small raised ridges you can feel under the hand. The word comes from French piquer, to prick. On cotton polos the face is usually a double-knit structure: two yarn systems lock so the diagonal texture holds, the collar stands, and the body still moves air.

For a fuller definition of the weave, fibers, and pronunciation, see what pique means in clothing. For how smooth jersey compares on the same silhouette, see jersey vs piqué polo.

Why it works in heat

Breathability comes from the open face. Air moves through the ridges instead of sitting against a flat plane. Moisture spreads across the surface rather than pooling in one spot, so cotton pique often feels cooler than a dense jersey tee on a long walk or boat day.

Structure is the other half. A pique polo keeps the placket and collar cleaner through humidity than many soft single knits. You can wear it to lunch, a terrace table, or a casual office day without the neck collapsing. The cloth is still light enough for resort packing next to linen or voile.

Durability follows from the locked face. Outdoor days and frequent cold washes wear less on a well-made cotton pique than on a thin plain jersey of the same weight. Shape holds if you avoid high dryer heat.

Color and garment dye

Cotton pique takes garment dyeing well. Color settles into the ridges instead of sitting flat, so depth stays after wash. Soft whites and blues can shift slightly piece to piece. That is the bath, not a defect. Colour inspiration for Ploumanac'h pieces comes from the Brittany coast that gives the brand its name and from the Ligurian shore where the company is based. The knits themselves are made with care in Italy or the EU, depending on the style.

Care in short

Wash cold with like colors. Button the placket. Turn the shirt inside out. Skip heavy softener. Air dry flat or on a low setting when you must use a machine. Full collar steps live here: how to wash a polo without ruining the collar. For travel weeks that mix polos with shirts, the same logic sits in how to dress for a week by the sea and what to pack for Capri.

When to choose pique

Choose pique when you want air movement plus a collar that stays put: ferry decks, golf, town walks, terrace dinners in heat. Choose smoother jersey when you want a softer drape and less texture under a light knit. Both can be garment dyed. The handfeel is the real difference.
