What to Pack for a Vacation in Capri, Italy

Capri sits in the Bay of Naples with steep stone stairs, boat days around the Faraglioni, and evenings that cool once the sun drops behind Monte Solaro. Pack for daytime heat first, then add one light layer for water breeze.

The practical rule for island travel is choosing natural fibers that let air circulate: cotton polo shirts, airy voile, and breathable linen. Solid colors outlast printed novelties, and a tight palette lets you swap tops and bottoms between daytime coves and evening piazzettas.

1. Footwear for limestone and boats

Capri is vertical. Walking from the Piazzetta down to Marina Piccola or along the Via Krupp means hundreds of polished stone steps that can be slippery underfoot.

  • Daytime: Sturdy walking shoes or broken-in espadrilles with rubber grip.
  • Boat days: Non-marking deck shoes or strap sandals that stay secure while stepping onto tender boats.
  • Evening: Unstructured loafers or handmade leather sandals bought locally in Anacapri. Leave high heels at home; cobblestones will catch them instantly.

2. Daytime on boats and swimming coves

Midday sun on the water is intense. You need pieces that pull on easily over swimwear and dry quickly.

  • Two to three breathable cotton tees or relaxed tops.
  • A light long-sleeve cotton voile or linen shirt to keep the sun off your arms while out on the water.
  • Two pairs of tailored swim trunks or quick-drying shorts that look appropriate when stepping off the boat straight into a seaside trattoria.

3. Afternoon town walks and lunch

In Capri town and Anacapri, daytime dress is relaxed but composed. Athletic gym wear feels out of place.

  • Piqué polo shirts: A breathable cotton piqué polo holds its collar shape in humidity much better than a jersey t-shirt. The knit structure allows air to move freely while keeping you polished for an outdoor terrace lunch.
  • Shorts: Tailored cotton or linen shorts hitting just above the knee in neutral shades like stone, navy, or washed sage.

4. Evening dinners and terrace drinks

When the sun sets, breeze comes off the Gulf of Naples. Dinners at cliffside restaurants call for simple long layers.

  • Linen trousers: Straight-leg linen slacks stay cool while adding formality for dinner.
  • Collared shirts: An open-weave linen or crisp cotton shirt worn with sleeves pushed up.
  • A thin knit layer: Pack one lightweight knit sweater in fine merino or cotton-cashmere to drape over your shoulders. It covers you on open-air boat rides back to the harbor and nighttime walks through town.

Garment-dyed care while traveling

Garment-dyed cotton and linen pack easily and soften with every wash. If you need to refresh garments in your hotel room, rinse in cool water, gently reshape collars and seams by hand, and hang them to air dry away from harsh direct sunlight.
