Comment laver un polo sans abîmer le col
The collar is the first place a polo shows hard washing. Heat, spin, and open plackets stretch the neckband. Cotton piqué holds shape when you treat it gently; it softens and rolls when you do not.
Most Ploumanac'h styles in our men's polos collection are cut in cotton piqué and finished after sewing. Color sits in the ridges of the cloth. Cold water and air drying protect both the neck and that dye depth. For what piqué is and why polos use it, read about pique fabric meaning in clothing. For how finished clothes get their color, see what is garment dyeing.
Before you wash
Read the care label. Fiber and temperature there override any general tip.
Button the placket, including the top button. An open collar catches on other garments and twists the band.
Turn the shirt inside out. The face of the piqué rubs less against zippers and denim.
Separate lights and darks. Garment-dyed colors can release a little dye in the first few washes; keep them with like colors.
Machine wash
Use a gentle or delicate cycle.
Prefer cold water. Warm is fine for sturdy cotton if the label allows it. Skip hot. Heat is what shrinks and warps collars.
Use a mild detergent. Avoid chlorine bleach and heavy softeners. Softener coats the ridges and can leave the hand dull.
Do not overload the drum. A crowded load pulls harder on collars and cuffs.
Hand wash (optional)
Fill a basin with cold water and a small amount of mild detergent. Soak briefly, press the cloth gently, rinse until the water runs clear. Do not wring the collar. Press water out between towels instead.
Dry without wrecking the collar
Skip the dryer when you can. Tumble heat softens the interfacing and rolls the edge.
Reshape the collar while the shirt is damp: lay the neck flat, smooth the points, and leave the top button done.
Air dry flat on a clean towel or rack. Hanging wet cotton can stretch the shoulders; flat is safer for the neck.
If you must tumble, use low or air-only and pull the shirt out while still slightly damp, then finish flat with the collar set.
After wash
A light press on the collar, with a cloth between iron and cloth, restores the edge if it looks soft. Keep the iron moderate on cotton; cooler on blends.
Store folded or on a shaped hanger. Do not crush the collar under a stack of heavy knits.
