What to Wear to Vail for Her

Vail is one of the most beautiful places in the world, no matter what the season. The fresh, clean air, soaring mountain peaks, and cozy chalets have made it a much-loved vacation destination, whether for a winter sports extravaganza or romantic weekend getaway.

Fall colors painted across the valley entice countless travelers during the fall, with the fresh powder and challenging lines on the ski hill luring winter enthusiasts. Skiing and snowboarding are obvious choices for winter activities but there are also plenty of things to do off the slopes.

As the seasonal weather varies as much as the colors of the turning leaves, we put together your ultimate fashion guide for what to wear when you’re out and about in Vail throughout the fall and winter season.

What Not to Wear

Colorado is well-known as a pretty laid-back state, so you can rest assured that fashion in Vail is a bit more relaxed than in other luxury ski resorts of the world. However, the local style still emphasizes smart silhouettes and well-fitting, functional clothes, so avoid a fashion faux pas and leave your ripped jeans, sweatpants, shorts and sneakers at home.

Another tip to help you blend in with the locals: ski wear does not double as après ski wear. Try to resist the temptation to go to dinner still wearing your insulated pants and ski boots. You’ll be much more comfortable and in sync with the local crowd of you stop by your room and change into something fresh with a bit more style personality.

One Outfit, Many Looks

If there was a quintessential look for women in Vail, it would be skinny jeans, low-heeled ankle boots, a knit top, and a cozy outer layer. This ensemble is comfortable, practical, and flattering on every figure type. The beauty of it is in its versatility, where simple swaps of the footwear, pants, or outer layer allow you to create a myriad of custom looks, from dressy to trendy to casual. It also gives fashionistas the ability to layer up for cooler temperatures.

Fashion blogger and Colorado native, Amber from Every Once In a Style, executes the look flawlessly. The dark wash of her jeans and rich brown tones of her ankle-boots and

oversized cardigan blend seamlessly with an autumn color palette. The oversized handbag is a brilliant accessory thanks to its luxurious texture and it’s large enough to hold all her essentials plus her cardigan if she finds herself warming up beside the fireplace.

For an edgier –and slightly warmer- spin on this outfit, we found Denver Darling, Abby Miller. Vail is one of her favorite places in the world and she escapes to its slopes several times a year (she even got married there!) Abby’s jacket pairs perfectly with the long knit top and black skinny jeans, and her fur-trimmed accessories bring in a feminine touch to balance the edginess of the jacket. Her lightweight leather gloves add the final touch, offering a stylish option separate from her warm ski mittens. We’ll wager that she invested in smartphone compatible gloves. They have specially designed fingertips to keep your fingers warm without impeding your communication.

Classy, Comfortable, Chic

Leggings become effortlessly chic when paired with a long top and the right footwear. Deborah from Fabulous After 40 has put together a leggings-based ensemble that showcases a dramatic, geometric-print poncho in a beautiful and calming grey and black color palette. She completes the look with a pair of classy and elegant flat-soled boots that are perfect for walking around the village.

Deborah’s look is very versatile and would look great with a long sweater in place of the knit top and poncho. Our alpaca wool cowl-neck sweater is soft and cozy and the hip-length cut is especially flattering when paired with leggings. For a Nordic-inspired look, try our alpaca merino blend sweater - the warmth and moisture-wicking properties of the wool make it a perfect for bustling around the village or lounging beside the fireplace.

Celebrating the Winter Accessories

One of the most fun aspects of the temperatures cooling is adding a long list of accessories to your wardrobe. From chic knit hats to cashmere scarves to pairing gloves with your outfits, the winter season brings an added flair to fashion.

Don’t forget sun protection! Pairing a daily moisturizer with a strong SPF with classy shades will not only have you looking good, you’ll be able to beat that classic, yet unfashionable, “google tan line.”

That just won’t pair with any outfit.
